Church Donation Helps Underprivileged Children in Ghana

The Africa West Area Humanitarian Services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has donated learning materials – 150 desks, 108 storage units and three bookshelves – to the students of the Urban Poor Child Organization.

To date, this community based organization has trained 8,500 underprivileged children through various school programs and workshops, resulting in some of its students gaining admission into institutions of higher learning.

“This donation was in accordance with the Church’s philosophy to grant humanitarian aid to organizations of our faith as well as other faiths,” said Aggrey Ballo, first counselor of the Kaneshie Stake (a stake is a group of Latter-day Saint congregations, similar to a diocese).

“It is the duty of every Christian following the teachings of Jesus Christ to emulate his charitable attributes by extending helping hands to the needy in society,” he added.
Kwaku Gideon, founder of the Urban Poor Child Organization, expressed gratitude to the Church leaders for the gesture and called on other organizations to follow such steps and show love to the children.

“Individuals and corporations should take on the responsibility to help less privileged children in their communities since the government does not have the means to adequately address such problems,” Gideon said.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has spearheaded many humanitarian efforts in Ghana, including the recent neonatal resuscitation training in Accra, wheelchair distribution in Nsawam, audiology training at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, vision treatment at the Komfe Anokye Teaching Hospital and clean water development in the Greater Accra area.
