Ga Traditional Authority visits the Africa West Area Presidency

On 18 February 2021, the Honorable King Maker and Administrator of the Ga Paramount Stool, Nii Yankose II, along with the Queen Mother Naa Aba Densua I visited The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Africa West Area office. They met with Elder Larry S. Kacher, First Counselor Africa West Area Presidency; along with Elder Jorg Klebingat, Second Counselor Africa West Area Presidency. Also in attendance were Elder Richard Ahadjie of the Seventy and Emelia Ahadjie, the Director of Communication for the Africa West Area, who translated the languages for the meeting.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen the relationship between the Church and the Ga Traditional Authority and to discuss possible developments within the Ga Communities. Elder Klebingat welcomed Nii and Naa and expressed gratitude for the visit. Nii gave a background to the history of the Ga people and where they came from, and how they settled in the coastal areas of Ghana, which is today known as the Ga land.

Nii expressed interest in genealogy and the couple recalled a visit to Salt Lake City in August 2019 for a United Nations Civil Society Conference and had the opportunity to get to know the Church and family history work being performed.  Nii also indicated he has his genealogy traced back to 1200 AD.  Elder Ahadjie spoke about proxy baptism and Elder Kacher also discussed the importance of ancestors.

There were also discussions of the Ga Administration’s plans for helping and investing in the rising generation. Elder Klebingat also explained the Church’s focus and work being done in this area. Elder Kacher and Elder Klebingat expressed the Church’s readiness to support working together in these initiatives.
