On 23 December 2023, members of the Obuasi Ghana District of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints undertook a massive cleanup exercise within and around the Obuasi Government Hospital in the Ashanti region of Ghana.  This is the second year that the Church has served at the Hospital by beautifying the buildings and grounds.

District members began gathering at 6:30 AM on the hospital grounds.  The Obuasi District of the Church is comprised of nine branches, or congregations, throughout the Obuasi Municipal District. Under the direction of the Hospital’s Environmental Health Officer, Evans Kumi, the work crew was given various assignments and tasks were assigned to individuals and groups.

“I was here last year and witnessed the cleaning work then and now! Your church epitomizes the teachings of the Lord, that cleanliness is next to Godliness,” said Kumi. “We are grateful, the premises of the hospital has really changed and is much more beautiful now!”

The local members swept and mopped the floors of the wards including the outpatient area, cleaned gutters within the hospital and the outside walls, weeded and cleared brush within the perimeter of the hospital, cleaned windows, and burned debris.

Leading the group of volunteers was President Thomas Tabi, of the Obuasi Ghana District, who led the charge in weeding and clearing the bushes on the hospital grounds.  He was joined by his first counselor, Kumah Adams, and other stake and branch leaders.

Joining the District members in their work was Peace Amati, the hospital administrator.  Although new to the hospital, Amati was aware of the work the Church had done the previous year.  “We are indeed grateful for your amazing sense of service and support! I am new here but, have been informed of the amazing work that you do as a church.  I am grateful and the hospital is grateful.”

Amanda Sarfo, staff nurse in the children’s ward of the Obuasi government hospital, was overwhelmed by the cheerful giving of the District volunteers. “You have shown by your kind gesture that you understand all the teachings of Jesus Christ. The hospital administration, the workers and all the patients here are grateful, may God bless you.”

As the workers concluded the work project, Portia Agyeiwaa, a midwife in the maternity ward shared, “This can only come from your church.  I follow the amazing things you do for communities and people, it’s time for me to investigate and join.”
