An 87-year-old African Latter-day Saint pioneer, Adwoa Adutwumwaah, was joined by hundreds of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 25, 2017, as they celebrated Africa Day, a day of unity. Children as young as 5 joined the matron on a six mile walk for health. The purpose of the event was to mobilize, strengthen and unify families.

“We Walk for Christ” was the theme as Latter-day Saints and friends met at 6:00 a.m. in three locations surrounding Dichemso Chapel, the central meeting location of the Kumasi Ghana Dichemso Stake of the Church (a stake is a group of Latter-day Saint congregations). Each group traveled a minimum of five miles to the meeting hall.
More than 550 people made up of children, mothers, fathers and grandparents rallied together—singing, walking and cheering for one another as they completed the arduous trek.
Mrs. Evelyn Owusu, of the Ghana Public Health Department, was moved by the number of the mothers and children participating in the event. Mrs. Owusu addressed the gathering on issues of childrearing, the role of mothers and breast cancer awareness. She encouraged those attending to live healthily and eat well-balanced foods.
The President of Ghana Kumasi Dichemso Stake, Kofi Gyimawu Sosu, was overwhelmed by the attendance. “I see the unity in us,” he said, “... when young and old gather so early for this event, I see the strength of our faith. With this faith we can unite families and build together. We are sending a message to our communities, and the entire world that Jesus Christ is our chief cornerstone and the source of our strength.”
Honorable Kwabena Nsenhyire, National Coordinator of the Ashanti Regional National Disaster Management Organization, was present and joined leaders of the Dichemso Stake as they observed the gathering of Saints. He encouraged them to live healthy lives, both physically and spiritually.
Referring to this year’s celebrations, the African Union Commission states Africa’s young people are an enormous resource for the continent’s development. Africa Day celebrates the African way of life, culture, art, the gift of music and Africa’s love for bright colors.
