Penyi Health Centre Helped by LDS Charities

Healthcare for Mothers and Babies Improved

People living near the community of Penyi, in the Volta Region of Ghana, will receive better medical care thanks to equipment donated by LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Penyi Health Centre is a “First Level” care facility for maternity and family medical needs. LDS Charities donated birthing tables, suture material, infant resuscitation kits and other medical equipment to the health center which serves Penyi and surrounding communities.

“Patients in need were referred to distant facilities because we did not have the equipment to care for them," said senior midwife, Vicentia Avor. "Now our nurses and midwives can use their training to give quality health care right here where our patients live.”

“Most of our centers do not have the required equipment to properly care for patients,” said Doris Quame, Acting Director of Health Services for Ketu North. Quamie added that the donation of supplies and equipment "will enhance the ability of our staff to save the lives of patients at risk. Long live the Latter-day Saints. Long live Ketu North, and long live Ghana!”

Patricia Deku, who assists with maternity and delivery said, “We are so much grateful for this gift. We can do our jobs better and our mothers will be safe.”

Traditional leaders from sixteen villages within the district were present for the ceremony where the equipment was presented to the clinic. Retired educator from Ketu North District, John Gohoho, was selected by those leaders to serve as the Tsiami (spokesman) for the event.

Gohoho said, “Christianity has been in Ketu North District for more than a century. Your church has come only recently, yet you step forward to help the people of our villages. This is a wonderful day. On behalf of every Togbe (chief) in our district, we thank you for your generosity. You are truly living Christianity the way God intended.”
